Samoa – An Itinerary For a Week In This South Pacific Paradise

If you are looking for a beach vacation on a tropical white sandy beach, overhung with coconut palms, then this is your island! Or should I say…..islands. Upolu is the main island where Apia, the capital, is located. Savaii, the bigger island is quite a different experience, and not to be missed. There are several much smaller islands dotted along the coast.

While you will want to spend much of your time on one of the glorious beaches, there is much more to do in Samoa. Below is a suggested itinerary for a week .You would be best to hire a car for sightseeing. You will want to take time each day to relax around a pool, or at a beach. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the many wonderful, open air restaurants and RELAX!

Day 1 – Arriving at Faleolo Airport, you will instantly feel the heat! Consistently around 26-27 degrees celsius, night temperatures rarely drop below 23 degrees. It is about a 45 minute drive into Apia. You will immediately start to relax, with your first experience of colourful villages and crystal clear turquoise water stretching to the white foam of the reef. Once you have settled in, it is a good time for a brief wander around the town, or sampling a Vailima beer, around the pool. Enquire which night the Fiafia is held. There are usually only one or two nights weekly when hotels put these on, so you need to plan in advance.

Day 2 – Morning – Explore Apia, including the markets. There are two markets – the Beach Rd Market on the waterfront near the Tusitala(Kitano) Hotel is for
clothing lavalavas
tapa cloth
carved wooden goods including the traditional kava bowl
jewellery made from shell, coconut husk and seeds

You will find that generally they do not bargain. Ask if they will give you a cheaper price for two and they will invariably reply that their boss is not here today so they cannot do this. It is worth walking down to Marketi Fou the fruit market, where you can wander amongst the locals as they do their normal daily shopping. Samoa does not have tropical fruits such as pineapples and mangos year round. They have two three week seasons annually. Bananas and oranges are always available, with other fruits such as passionfruit, guavas and vi fruit at different times.

Afternoon – If you are keen to snorkel, Pololo Deep is on the edge of town and the only beach near Apia. You will find it best at mid to low tide.

Day 3- Morning- Visit Vailima, home of Robert Louis Stevenson, on Cross Island Road. He was Samoa’s much loved Tusitala – “teller of tales” , and lived here for the last few years of his life. You can look through the wonderful colonial house which has been restored, and do the 40 minute walk to the top of Mt Vaea, Stevenson’s final resting place, with magnificent views over Apia.

Afternoon – After lunch it is a good time to take a forty minute coastal drive out to Piula for a cooling swim in the freshwater natural pool, which flows into a cave. Situated in the grounds of a beautifully renovated church, you can enjoy the pool, looking out to sea over the narrow rock wall, that separates the two. The pool closes at 4. o’clock, when the local women bring the washing from the boys church boarding school down, and the fish come out from their hiding places.

Day 4 – All Day – Hire a car and drive over the hill, through the rainforest.Have a look at the Bahai temple at the top of the hill,then go and down to Coconuts Resort where you could have morning tea or lunch. Leaving Coconuts, follow the coast road back to Apia, via the many villages and beaches.If you have time to detour to Togitogi Falls, they are beautiful.Or you may like to come back via Papasea – Sliding Rocks. Best when there has been a lot of rain.

Day 5 – Morning – Take the car ferry to Savaii. There are many accommodation options from beach fales at Stevensons or Janes, Savaii Lagoon….. a middle option or Le Logoto for a more luxurious experience.

Afternoon – Only 2 kilometres along the road is Satoalepai village – where you can swim with turtles. This is a very beautiful place, and while the turtles are in captivity, they have a big pool, and are well cared for. They are very friendly, and it was a highlight of my trip.

Day 6- All Day – Drive around Savaii – Plan to stop at
Saleaula Lava Fields – an amazing insight into the effects of the eruptions of Mt Matavanu between 1905 and 1911.
Alofaaga Blowholes – You will need to check the tides as you will want as near to full tide as possible for the best viewing of the blowholes.These are some of the best you will see anywhere in the world! You will pay $5WS each which includes a local guide. Carry on to Vaisala Hotel via villages, and beaches. This is the best option for a meal, unless you take a picnic basket.
Stop at the ruins of the village destroyed by Cyclone Ofa.
NOTE: You will want to allow plenty of time for photo stops. This is a very photogenic country, and Savaii has some wonderful spots for photographers to indulge their hobby!

Day 7- All Day – Experience a night in a beach fale. This could be on Savaii, or after taking the ferry back to Upolu, around the coast where you have several choices of beach fales. If basic is not for you, you may prefer upmarket Seabreeze Resort at Paradise Cove, with excellent snorkelling and probably the best view of live coral on the island.

Day 8 – To Airport

High Intensity Training Programs – Better Results in Less Time

If you want to build muscle and burn fat, taking your workouts to a higher level could mean the difference between mediocre results and more of the same, or getting the breakthrough in your results that you really want.

If you talk to a “died in the wool” body builder, you will discover that the successful ones are guys and gals that probably take way less time building muscle and burning fat in the gym than the average person you see in your local fitness center.

The reason is, they understand that a shorter, high intensity training program, that is laser focused will build more muscle and burn more fat much quicker.

If you are doing over thirty minutes of cardio a day, three or four days a week, and still not sufficiently burning off body fat, you should reevaluate your intensity level. I’m not saying that your workout is not beneficial. But if you are not getting the results you want it, you should be open to trying something different.

By our nature, we tend to think that if something is not working we just need to do it more often or do it longer. But if you do too much cardio it can be counter productive. Excessive cardio will actually begin to decrease muscle volume. Think of the long distance runners that you see on television and the lack of muscle that they have.

I went from one hundred eighty one pounds and sixteen percent body fat, to one hundred sixty eight pounds and a little over eight percent body fat in ninety days by doing the following:

* Twenty minutes of high intensity cardio, three days a week;

* Forty five minutes of high intensity weight training three alternating days a week;

* Changing my eating habits to a reasonable five smaller meals a day;

* One day a week I eat whatever I want.

(One particular high intensity training program I like requires forty five minutes of focused, intense training three days a week to build muscle and burn fat, and that’s it. And you can do it at home with minimal workout equipment!)

Since then (that was 1999), I have learned that I can maintain my goal physique with fifteen minutes of cardio and thirty minutes of weight training the same number of days, with no problem.

Of course, I am not a competitive body builder and I don’t need to look like one. I just want to feel good and look good.

If you like spending a lot of time at the gym, that’s OK of course. But if you want to have more efficient workouts and spend less time working out and get better results, consider looking into a more high intensity training program. You may be shocked by how fast you are able to build more muscle and burn more fat.

Tang Fish For Marine Aquariums

Saltwater fish from the Zebrasoma group are collectively known as Tang fish. This genus of fish all make ideal community fish because they are not aggressive toward other species. For this reason they are often included in many home aquariums. Here they can live out a peaceful life grazing on algae and gliding amongst the coral.

Tangs have round laterally compressed bodies with a pointed nose and mouth that protrudes from the front. Coloration is different depending on the species observed. The design is typically bold with bright colors. Some of their fins have sharp forward facing spines that can inflict deep wound if the Tang is handled or attacked. Therefore you should never attempt to touch them with your bare hands.

Mature Tang size can range from half a foot to forty centimeters. This is again dependent on the individual species. Be sure to select a variety that will not grow to large for your fish tank. Especially large species include the lipstick, regal and clown Tangs.

The regal Tang is in fact the variety of fish portrayed by Dory in the Finding Nemo movie. Another Tang featured in this Pixar animation was Bubbles, the small yellow Tang. These characters have popularized Tang fish amongst a young generation of cinema watchers.

Tiny algae form the basis of a Tang’s diet and should be offered in the form of live algae or commercially produced Tang foods. Carefully meeting this requirement is the best way to prevent any disease in this fish. Many marine fish keepers culture algae on a large object for the purpose of feeding their Tangs. If you have a sump filter this container can be utilized as a space where the algae can be grown in this way. Just place the object in to mature for a few weeks. A light should be present to allow photosynthesis and and the resulting algal development. When a coating has formed place the algae covered item in with the Tangs and watch them feast on the microflora.

As far as marine species go Tangs are considered quite susceptible to disease. Precautions should be made to quarantine any new fish to be housed with your Tang to reduce the spread of pathogens. Consider treating them with copper sulphate during quarantine even if no disease symptoms are present. When initially selecting your Tangs also keep this disease susceptibility in mind and only choose fish from disease free aquariums.

This is part one of 2 videos representing the performance art of Kata Mejia at the Lab Gallery. Forty Weeks is a performance-installation that celebrates the miracle of life and the act of giving birth. It represents the time a mother carries her child during pregnancy and explores various aspects of motherhood including nurturing, the relationship between mother and child, and the intimacy of breast feeding. The artist uses repetition to present the first stages of life as an accumulation of time and a period of growth. KATA MEJIA is a performance artist with a background in painting and dance who lives and works in Philadelphia, USA. She graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a Masters degree in Performance in 2004. She received her BFA from Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Medellin. The Forty Weeks Of Pregnancy – Forty Weeks Of Amazement

You are pregnant. It has been confirmed and now you will embark on the most fascinating journey of your lifetime…. living with your body developing another body within it. Understanding what is going on in your body through the next forty weeks . the forty weeks of pregnancy ….. is of the utmost importance for you to thoroughly enjoy this time … as you should.

The early signs of pregnancy have caused you to confirm your pregnancy… some of those early signs being tender .. slightly swollen breasts, a feeling of nausea,heightened sense of smell. These are caused by hormone changes as the baby begins to develop.

What can you expect during the forty weeks ahead?

Weeks 1 – 8: The egg fertilizes and attaches itself to the uterus wall. This is when morning sickness may set in .. though it may not be “morning” sickness for you.. but “anytime of the day” sickness. By the sixth week .. your baby’s heart begins to beat as other organs begin to develop. An ultrasound in the eighth week will show your baby’s arms and legs.

Weeks 9- 16: Are you anxious to find out if you are having a boy or a girl? This is the stage it can be detected.. providing it cooperates during an ultrasound. Should you want it to be a surprise … turn away from the ultrasound screen when the test is performed. This is the time your appetite will begin to increase, and by the fourteenth week you will be able to hear the baby’s heartbeat on a monitor. Around the end of the fifteenth week you will be thinking of maternity clothes as your stomach takes on a definite roundness and as pressure is put on your bladder … your trips to the bathroom multiply.. especially at night.

Weeks 17 – 24: This is the stage when your baby begins to really grow in weight. Reflexes develop along with ears and eyes as the baby’s greatest development takes place during this time. The critical stage of development is passed at twenty weeks and by the twenty-fourth week the baby’s heartbeat is strong enough to be heard by an ear pressed to your stomach.

Weeks 25 – 32: During this stage the capillary system of your baby’s body is developing along with the lungs. You definitely know when the baby is kicking now and at the end of the twenty-eighth week… the chances of the baby surviving is completely positive . By the thirty-second week… all of your baby’s senses are developed.

Weeks 33 – 40: Don’t be concerned if you experience some constipation during this stage as the uterus puts pressure on the bowels. Added pressure on muscles and nerves may cause sudden cramping at the bottom of the uterus now and some aching in the lower back. By the end of the thirty-sixth week you should be tuned in to any signs of labor. As the baby drops and positions itself in your pelvis at the end of the thirty-eighth week. …. changing your center of gravity.. your sense of balance may seem somewhat skewed. This is the time you should pack your suitcase and be prepared to head to the hospital at any time … day or night.

You are embarking on the most miraculous time of your life ….. the forty weeks of pregnancy … the forty weeks of miracle building.

I found myself drawn into this story from the beginning. The young characters were entertaining, and the storyline very believeable. The more I read, the more I wondered what was going to happen next.
